The Thor's hammer was the hammer of the Norse god Thor, with which he fought his enemies. The Thor's hammer was therefore also called Mjölnir by the Vikings, which means crusher or lightning.
In the 9th and 10th centuries, the Thor's hammer was very popular among the Vikings as an ornament, as it enabled them to distinguish themselves as Old Believers from the emerging Christianity. Interestingly, Thor's hammers were mainly found in women's graves.
