The Viking rock crystal pendants are a remarkable feature of the historical find material and these so-called Gotland spheres are not without reason among the most remarkable evidence of medieval jewellery craft in the Viking Age.
In addition to spherical rock crystal pendants and flat lenses, entire necklaces with crystal spheres in silver settings have even been found on Gotland. Some of these Viking Age Gotland spheres even had a coating of silver on their backs that reflected light, creating an image of the person in front of it.
The silver settings of the Viking Age rock crystal pendants were often made in a filigree granulation technique, which suggests that they were made by Slavic craftsmen, as this was a typical manufacturing technique of Slavic jewellery production in the 10th century.
However, ball-shaped pendants with spheres made of rock crystal are already known from the 6th century, which were equipped with simple silver settings and are attested from the Anglo-Saxon region as well as in Alemannic and Frankish find material for the Merovingian period.
The rock crystal pendants of the Merovingians, however, are nowhere near the craftsmanship of the Viking Age silver settings from Gotland. The processing of rock crystal into spherical pendants was, however, already common during the early Middle Ages.
