The Thor's hammer was the weapon of the Viking god Thor with which he fought his enemies. The Vikings therefore called the Thor's hammer Mjölnir, which means crusher or lightning.
In the 9th and 10th centuries, the Thor hammer was very popular among the Vikings, as it was a way of distancing oneself as an Old Believer from the emerging Christianity. It is interesting to note that Thor's hammers were mainly found in women's graves.
