The Old Norse name Mjölnir for the Thor's hammer means crusher or lightning. The Mjölnir was the magic war hammer of the Viking god Thor, who used it to fight the enemies of the gods, especially the giants and, at the end of the world in Ragnarök, the Midgard Serpent. After being thrown, the Thor's hammer returned to the god's hand all by itself.
Wearing a Thor's hammer was widespread among the Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries because by wearing a Mjölnir pendant as a pagan, one could distance oneself from the emerging Christianity for all to see.
