Alternatively, it can also be used as a
pilgrim's badge. The various openings make it very easy to sew onto the garment.
Saint Adrian of Nicomedia was a former Roman soldier who was
martyred for his Christian faith by having his limbs smashed on an anvil. His relics were transferred to Geraardsbergen in Belgium in 1175, making this foundation an important place of pilgrimage.
Patron saint of soldiers, jailers, blacksmiths and messengers, Adrian was also considered a
protector against the plague in the fourteenth century. On both badges he is depicted in full armour, holding a sword in one hand and an anvil in the other.
