Who was the Bamberg Rider?
The Bamberg Rider is the oldest surviving, lifelike medieval
equestrian sculpture carved from stone, dating from around 1230. For almost 800 years now, the famous figure of the Bamberg Rider has adorned Bamberg Imperial Cathedral, yet until now nobody knew who this lifelike figure actually depicted.
Today, however, it seems certain that the Bamberg Rider is in fact Saint
Stephen of Hungary; this is supported, on the one hand, by the close ties between Bamberg and Hungary, and, on the other, by the fact that Stephen was married to Gisela, the sister of Emperor Henry II.
Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia, a daughter of the Hungarian king, was also the niece of Ekbert of Andechs-Merania, then
Bishop of Bamberg, and was staying in Bamberg at the time the equestrian statue was created. It is therefore likely that these dynastic links were the decisive impetus for the erection of a statue of Saint Stephen of Hungary at Bamberg Cathedral.
