Single link for a Viking Age stave chain after a find.
The historical model for this Viking Age stave chain link was a find from the village Havdhem on the Swedish isle of Gotland.
The Viking period stave chain link has a length of 4.9 cm and is fitted with a ring 0.5 cm in diameter. A longer chain is also possible by simply putting together a chain of several links or by connecting it with our four-link staff chain if its length is not long enough.
For attaching to brooches and pendants we recommend our small Mounting-Ring, for extending with other bar chain elements we recommend the ring eyelet. For mounting, you only need two small needle-nose pliers with which the rings are bent open a little.
The stave chain was used during the Viking Age to carry a needle box at waist level attached to a bowl brooch or to fasten toilet cutlery, which was typical of the women's garments of the Viking Age.
The staff chain is also very suitable as a suspension for a Viking knife sheath or sax scabbard. Here, the links are mounted single or in pairs at an angle to the fittings of the scabbard, creating a triangular suspension.
