Ships or boats played an important role in the time of the Vikings and were often the subject of
literature and art. Depictions of ships can already be found in Scandinavia in Bronze Age rock carvings. During the Viking Age, ship-shaped stone placements were erected to escort the deceased to the gods.
And Viking kings were even given
entire wooden ships to take to their graves, as is known, for example, from the sites of Tuna, Oseberg and Gokstad. Thus, the ship played an important role for the Norse not only in the present, but also in the Otherworld.
