A detector find in Gørding near Ribe / Denmark in 2019 revealed a small snake made of
pure gold that was once worn by a Viking as a pendant, as wear marks reveal. The use of ornamental wire, pearl threads and granulations point to the younger Viking Age and probably originated from the royal workshops in Jelling.
The original snake pendant from Gørding was made by working
thin gold sheet over a snake-shaped mould, giving the snake its plastic form. The motif was then further shaped by soldering on filigree granules in the form of small flowers, beads and beaded wire.
