Replica of a Viking hairpin made of real bone.
Here you can buy a replica of a Viking bone pin that was made after a find from Trondheim in Norway dating back to the 11th century.
Hairpins and dress pins made of bone were very common in Viking times and were a cheap alternative to the expensive bronze and silver dress pins and brooches.
Bone pins are therefore found throughout the Viking settlement area in the period from 800 to 1100 AD and are known from sites such as Birka, Haithabu, York and Trondheim.
The wider end of the Viking hairpin from Trondheim is decorated with a delicately carved motif in the Urnes style.
Needles made of horn and bone were used by the Vikings to close their cloaks, but also served well as hairpins to pin up their hair.
The replica of the Viking hair pin from Trondheim measures approximately 16 x 3 cm.
The shaft of the bone pin is about 0.6 cm thick.
