Viking bone pin with dragon head from Hedeby.
The artistically crafted Viking robe pin or hairpin made of real bone is handcrafted and inspired by a model from the Viking city of Hedeby.
Needles like the Hedeby dragon head bone pin were used to close a Viking cape. But these needles also served well as hairpins.
Bone and horn robe pins and hairpins were widespread in Viking times because they were an inexpensive alternative to the costly bronze or silver robe pins.
Such bone pins with dragon heads are found throughout the Viking settlement area between 800 and 1100 AD and are known, for example, from the sites of Birka, Hedeby, York and Trondheim.
Dimensions: 16 x 2 cm. The shaft of the Viking bone pin is approx. 0.6 cm thick.
