The oval brooch is also called
bowl brooch or tortoise brooch and was already used in the Vendel period, but mainly during the Viking Age.
During a very long phase of the Viking Age, the oval brooch was used on women's garments to
attach the apron to the garment below the shoulder and was always worn in pairs.
Dimensions of the oval brooch: 6 x 3.8 x 1.8 cm.
You can buy the Viking oval brooch in high-quality
bronze or in real
silver-plated.
The oval brooch was always worn as a pair during the Viking Age. It is therefore advisable to order two pieces of this Viking jewellery.
The price refers to one piece.
From 800 to 1000 A.D. the oval brooch was used as jewellery for Viking women's clothing and is often found in Viking era
women's burials. The respective design and execution provided information about the social status of the wearer.
The oval brooch is the most common type of brooch in the Viking Age and can be found in finds
from Ireland to the Volga. Apart from inexpensive mass-produced goods and simple copies, there were also extremely filigree, gold-plated silver oval brooches of the highest quality.
But whether inexpensive or precious: the Viking oval brooch always served in pairs to fasten the
shoulder straps of the upper garment.
In addition, one or more chains were often hung one above the other between the oval brooches and sometimes additionally attached to a round disc brooch or trefoil brooch in the middle of the chest.
A detailed treatise on the oval brooch can be found by Jan Petersen in the publication "Vikingetide smykker" from 1928.
