Hand-forged iron ring brooch with curled ends.
Here you can buy a hand-forged iron ring brooch with elegantly curled ends.
The ring brooch is a typical garment clasp from the Iron Age, which was used from the 1st century to the 10th century and beyond to fasten the cloak on the right shoulder.
The pin of the forged ring brooch is 10 to 11 cm long and sturdy enough to penetrate even strong woollen fabrics.
The ring brooch is forged from iron and measures 9 x 7 cm.
The ring brooch was already in use by the Romans and Germanic tribes 2000 years ago and is considered one of the most common types of brooch; it was often forged from iron, but could also be made from bronze or silver.
Originally found in Spain, the ring brooch probably spread to Gaul and as far as the Rhine through the Romans' Ibero-Gallic auxiliary troops, where it was widely used for military purposes around the time of Christ's birth. In late antiquity, the ring brooch fell somewhat out of fashion, but experienced a new heyday during the Viking Age.
For right-handed men, the pin of the ring brooch is inserted through the fabric of the cloak on the right shoulder and then locked in place with the round part so that the ring brooch can no longer come loose and remains in place. In this way, the sword arm is free and is not hindered by the fabric of the cloak.
