Reproduction of a Merovingian bird whirl brooch.

This true-to-detail reproduction is based on an early medieval Bavarian brooch from the Merovingian period.

The original disc brooch was solidly cast from partially gold-plated silver and had a diameter of 4.6 cm and a thickness of 0.4 cm.
The historical model was found in Aschheim in Southern Germany and dates from around 600 AD.

The decoration showed four whirling heads of birds of prey looking to the left with eyes made of garnet inlays, flanked by four necks decorated with plaited bands. In the centre of the original disc brooch there was a four-pass area with notched decorations and niello inlays.

Link to the original brooch...

Our reproduction of this Merovingian brooch is offered in high-quality bronze and in real silver-plated and is, in contrast to the historical original, not provided with genuine garnet cloisonné but with red glass flow.

Dimensions of the Merovingian brooch: 4.6 cm.

On the back of that early medieval brooch there is a stable needle with a spiral spring, which gives the needle a good tension.

From the 5th to the early 7th century, disc brooches combined with bow brooches were a characteristic part of the four-fibrous dress of the wealthy woman during the early Middle Ages.
