Avar belt hanger with griffin from Vrap.
This detailed replica of an Avar griffin fitting with hinge is based on a historical find from Vrap in present-day Albania.
Link to the original griffin fitting...
The upper part of the griffin fitting is attached to the belt, the lower part remains
freely movable by means of a hinge. Here, either an object can be tied in the loop or, as was customary among the Avars, a narrow strap with further fittings is attached.
Bronze and silver belt fittings were very common among the Avars during the
Early Middle Ages and were important for rank, status and clan within Avar society. Therefore, belt sets were often found in Avar finds from the Merovingian period.
The Griffin belt hanger from Vrap
measures 4 x 3 cm. Passage 1.1 cm.
The fitting is suitable for belts with a width of 2 cm.
The belt hanger from Vrap is made of high-quality
bronze and also available in real
silver-plated.
Fastening: There are four pins on the back of the Avar belt fitting. To fasten the decorative rivets, simply insert them through the corresponding holes in the leather. It is best to use pliers to bend the tips inwards a little. If you then tap the pins flat with a hammer, the tip will sink into the leather and the Avar belt fitting will be stable and flat on the belt.
