The spiral is indeed one of the oldest Celtic motifs of all and, as a symbol, is more than 2,000 years old. For the Celts, the spiral was regarded as a symbol of the sun, as well as of growth and cosmic energy itself. A clockwise spiral represented the waning winter sun, whilst the anti-clockwise spiral represented the great summer sun, and the double spiral represented the equinox. The triple spiral is also known as the triskele and, in pre-Christian times, was regarded as a symbol of the triple goddess – maiden, mother, crone – and symbolised the succession of generations in life and the eternal cycle of nature.
