Early medieval Avar leather belt.
The 3 cm wide belt has a replica of an Avar belt buckle made of bronze, which was manufactured according to the Merovingian find from Vrap from the 7th century.
The Avar leather belt from Vrap can be worn knotted due to its length and is therefore ideally suited for garb in Viking and early medieval reenactment. Two embossed lines along the sides also give the Avar belt a slim line.
Two sizes are available:
Belt N: Length 161 cm - Circumference 91 - 109 cm
Belt EX: Length 176 cm - Circumference 101 - 119 cm
The buckle replica measures 8.3 x 4 cm.
A belt with a matching strap end from the same find is also available.
This extends the Avar belt by a further 9 cm.
Buckle and strap end fitting are available either in high-quality cast bronze or genuine silver-plated.
As was customary with Avar belt garnitures during the Merovingian period, other strap ends and fittings are also available, which were used to supplement the main strap on several secondary straps. See below.
The Avar belt is made of very durable cowhide 2.8 - 3.2 mm thick. The velvet-matt waxed leather acquires that natural patina over time that is so characteristic of genuine, vegetable-tanned leather.
