From the Greek, pentagram means "with five lines". The five-pointed star was considered a
mystical symbol by many ancient cultures, as two of its points point to the earth, two to the sides and one to the sky.
In this way, the pentagram unites the
four elements of earth, air, fire and water with the spirit that transcends them. The five-pointed star thus symbolises balance and wholeness. For Freemasons, the points symbolise diligence, prudence, justice, moderation and strength.
The pentagram is also a symbol of mathematics and astronomy and was used in the
Middle Ages as a defence against demons and witches.
The inverted pentagram is called the Druid's foot and is often regarded as a sign of the devil.
The Celtic Druids also regarded the pentagram as a
divine symbol in which they saw the sacred nature of the "fivefold" reflected in many things in life. The Celts also saw the pentagram as a sign of the goddess of the underworld, whom they called Morgan.
