Typical of Viking neck rings are several wires twisted together, which ensure
excellent flexibility so that the necklace can be easily bent open and closed and put on.
The torques are widely known as the epitome of
Celtic warrior jewellery, but what is less well known is that the Viking necklace was also worn by almost all Central European peoples: Almost all Central European peoples of antiquity knew chokers as jewellery.
Until the Migration Period, necklaces were worn not only by men but also by women among the
Germanic tribes. In the course of Late Antiquity, the choker then became a purely male form of jewellery and remained widespread in Northern Europe until the time of the Vikings.
Viking necklaces were usually made of narrow silver or bronze wires in
twisted or braided form and could be fitted with a hook fastener or elaborately designed end heads.
