Forged Viking iron Thor hammer from Läby.

This massive iron Thor's hammer was masterfully hand-forged according to a Viking Age find.

The model for this expressively shaped Thor's hammer is a Viking Age find from Läby in the Swedish province of Uppland near the Viking royal seat of Uppsala, which dates to the 10th century.

The original Thor's hammer from Läby was made of bronze and not of iron, although iron forged  iron Thor's hammers were also often used in the Viking Age.

The powerfully shaped Mjölnir of Läby measures 3.5 x 3 x 1 cm and can be worn as a pendant or amulet around the neck with the accompanying leather cord.


In the 9th and 10th centuries, the Thor's hammer was extremely popular and widespread among the Vikings as a form of jewelry - it was used by pagans to distance themselves from the increasingly emerging Christianity.

The Vikings called the Thor hammer Mjölnir, which meant crusher or lightning, because the Thor hammer was the magic war hammer of the Norse god Thor, with which he fought the giants and the Midgard serpent. Once Thor had thrown the Mjölnir, it always returned to the god's hand all by itself.
