Viking crucifix from Sanda.
Replica of a cross pendant from the Viking Age depicting Jesus after a find from Gotland.
The original of this Viking Age cross pendant with its detailed depiction of Jesus was found at Sanda on the Swedish island of Gotland.
Similar crucifixes can be found very frequently in finds from the end of the Viking Age and were worn particularly by the eastern Vikings, the Rus.
Cross pendants with a depiction of Jesus in a blessing gesture were both a profession of faith and a protective amulet.
The Viking crucifix is available in brass or silver colour, made of cast zamak.
Dimensions: 4.5 x 3.5 cm.
A 1 metre long black cotton ribbon is included with the Viking cross from Sanda.
During the Viking Age, the custom of wearing a cross with the image of Christ around the neck spread to Northern Europe. The intention was often to distinguish themselves from the old believers, the so-called heathens, who still adhered to the old belief in gods.
Among the Vikings, these crosses were often decorated with depictions of Jesus on the cross, which was particularly common among the Vikings in eastern Sweden and western Russia and can be traced back to Byzantine influences.
