In many cultures, the dragon had a mythical meaning as a magical creature. Among the Germanic tribes the dragon was also called Lindworm and the Vikings knew the dragon Fafnir and the Midgard Serpent. In Asia, the dragon is still worshipped today as a lucky charm and symbol of fertility, while the early Christians considered it the embodiment of "evil" par excellence.
Dragons were also attributed magical powers. It was believed that the blood of the dragon could protect against injuries, the eaten dragon's heart made one understand the language of the animals and the eaten dragon's tongue improved one's eloquence. The warriors of the Romans and Germanic tribes went into battle with dragon standards to intimidate their opponents, and in the art of the Viking Age the dragon was given a prominent position and sung about in many songs and sagas.
