Blade for a long knife of the Viking Era.

With a little skill, you can use this beautiful knife blade to craft a Viking long knife to your own design.

The long knife blade was crafted based on a find from the village of Hellvi on Gotland, Sweden. A large number of such blade types in various lengths are also known from the Viking settlement of Birka and from the Baltic region.

Link to the historical model...

The long knife was common not only among the Vikings, but also among the Anglo-Saxons, Franks and other Germanic tribes, and served well as a sort of small ‘machete’ in everyday life and as a handy weapon in battle.

The Viking-era long knife blade is made from 1095 carbon steel, a classic among knife steels. This steel is quite tough and grinds very well, whilst offering a solid service life. 1095 is an unalloyed, rust-prone tool steel with a Rockwell hardness of 54 HRC and a carbon content of 0.90 to 1.03%, with a manganese content of 0.3 to 0.5%.

A Sax blade made from 1095 carbon steel is indeed hard to beat and a reliable ‘workhorse’ – hard, flexible and break-resistant!
We recommend keeping the Sax blade dry and treating it occasionally with a little oil to prevent any surface rust.

The long knife blade has a sturdy spine and a pronounced hollow grind.

Dimensions:
Total length 30 cm
Cutting edge 19.5 cm
Blade back 6 mm
