Fittings for a Viking Age knife sheath or scabbard.
This Viking sheath or scabbard fitting with filigree break-through technique is made according to a model from grave 877 Birka / Sweden.
In Birka, on Gotland and in the Baltic States, numerous knife sheaths from the Viking Age have been found with elaborate bronze or silver fittings.
Usually, these fittings consisted of sheet metal decorated with various hallmarks - the find from Birka, on the other hand, is designed in filigree openwork and is unique.
The scabbard fitting is made of high-quality bronze and measures 10.4 x 2.5 cm.
The set includes two fittings and 8 brass pins in 1.6 mm diameter for mounting.
For mounting, one fitting is placed on the scabbard and the places for the holes are marked on the leather. After punching the holes, the brass pins are passed through both fittings and the centrally placed leather. The head of the pin should be on the front side.
Depending on the thickness of the material, shorten each pin to 1.5 - 2 mm and tap it in circulating strokes with a small hammer. In this way, the scabbard fittings are solidly bonded to the leather.
