The Ringerike style is an artistic style of the Viking Age, which was widespread in Scandinavia from the beginning to the second half of the 11th century and is named after the Ringerike landscape in Norway. The Ringerike style developed from the Mammen style at the beginning of the 11th century through Ottonian and Anglo-Saxon influences.
The Ringerike style utilises the motifs already used in the Mammen style, such as the lion (large animal), bird and snake, but is now dominated by tighter, clearer contours and a more naturalistic depiction. The tendril motifs already common in the Mammen style were taken from models from Ottonian and Anglo-Saxon art and further emphasised, giving the Ringerike style its typical appearance.
