The meaning of the triad: The triad is also known as the trinity and was a frequently used motif in Celtic culture, appearing in many depictions from the 6th century onwards, especially in medieval Ireland.
The triad is based on the idea of the Trinity: while in the pagan faith the trinity symbolises the soul, body and spirit, or the past, present and future, in the Christian context the symbolism of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit takes centre stage. The intertwined Celtic knot of the triad and the enclosing circular shape symbolise the incombustibility of the Trinity.
