Viking amulet with the motif of the Midgard Serpent.

This expressive Viking amulet was inspired by historical finds from the late Viking Age in the so-called Urnes style.

The Viking amulet depicts the Midgard Serpent, which was a very frequently depicted motif in Viking art and populated the Viking art world in numerous abstract forms.

The amulet depicting the Midgard Serpent is available in cast zinc alloy in brass or silver colour.

Viking Pendant diameter: 4.5 cm.

A 2 mm thick, 1 metre long black cotton cord for the Viking amulet is included.

In Viking and Germanic mythology, the Midgard Serpent was a sea serpent that spanned the globe and represented the end of the world. According to legend, the Midgard Serpent was once fathered by the Norse god Loki. In the doomsday epic of Ragnarök, the god Thor finally crushes the Midgard Serpent with his hammer before he himself dies from its poison.

The urnes style is typical of jewellery from the end of the Viking Age and can be found in finds from Russia to Ireland and dates from the middle of the 11th century. The Urnes style is the last of the great artistic styles of the Viking Age and was named Urnes style after the stave church of Urnes in southern Norway. Great carvings in this distinctive animal style were found in the church at Urnes.
