Roman fascinum - phallus amulet replica.

The original of this phallus pendant was once found on a Roman horse harness that a Roman officer had ridden in the Varus Battle at Kalkriese / Germany.

Phallus amulets were widely used in Roman antiquity under the term Fascinum and were worn around the neck as an amulet to protect against the evil eye.

Similar penis pendants are even known from the Middle Ages, and can also be found in many places outside Europe.

Dimensions of the Roman phallus amulet: 5 x 3 cm.

The Fascinum is made of cast zinc alloy, available in silver or brass colour.

The phallus amulet comes with a 2 mm thick, 1 metre long black cotton cord.

In ancient times, the phallus was not only a symbol of fertility and therefore a symbol of prosperity, but was also generally regarded as a lucky charm that could ward off misfortune. For this reason, phallic amulets, the so-called fascinum, were even worn by children and attached to Roman officers' horse harnesses.

An obscene meaning, as it is understood in the context of today's Christian moral concept, was not associated with the ancient phallus pendants. At that time, sexuality was not seen as something unclean and sinful, but rather as something positive and beneficial.
