In the symbolism of the Middle Ages, the heart stands for goodness, love and life itself. The symbol of the heart is based on stylized representations of fig and ivy leaves, as found in art as early as the 3rd millennium BC. In the medieval love literature of the 12th and 13th centuries, heart-shaped ivy leaves then appear in love scenes, which soon spread throughout Europe as a symbol of love and from which the present-day figure of the heart is based.
