The Hårby Valkyrie was discovered by an amateur archaeologist in 2012 and is a
real sensation among the archaeological finds from the Viking Age.
The figurine is in the tradition of similar Viking Age Valkyrie figures of the
9th century AD, but unlike these, the Valkyrie of Hårby is unique due to its three-dimensional form.
The Hårby Valkyrie holds a sword in her right hand and a
round shield in her left, her skirt reaches down to the ground and her hair is tied in a knot at the nape of her neck.
It is assumed that the figure represents one of the Valkyries, who in
Norse mythology escorted the fallen warriors to Valhalla. Other interpretations point to a Nordic shield maiden or the goddess Freya.
