This authentic replica of a Roman hairpin is detailed made after a find from Silchester / UK that dates to the 1st to 2nd century AD.

The Roman hairpin shows a filigree depiction of a hand picking a fruit.

It is assumed that there was a connection here with the cult of the Roman god Jupiter.

A connection with the Roman goddess Venus would also be conceivable, as historical statues of Venus often show her with an apple in her hand as a symbol of youthfulness.

Hairpins depicting a picking hand were very popular in Roman times and are known from several sites. Such beautifully designed hairpins were used to shape and secure the elegant updos of Roman ladies.

Roman hairpin dimensions: 14.5 x 1.3 cm
Pin at the base approx. 0.5 cm.
