In 1850, a Danish farmer was clearing the land near Lejre when he discovered a large
silver treasure consisting of three vessels and other valuables, which he took to a goldsmith in Roskilde. The goldsmith immediately informed the police, as according to Danish law, the valuables found in the ground belonged to the king.
The Viking treasure from Lejre dates back to the end of the 10th century and consists of several spectacular objects of
exceptional quality, including a large liturgical silver bowl of Anglo-Saxon provenance and two small vessels.
The smallest silver cup from Lejre shows four winged
female creatures of Scandinavian origin made with niello. It is speculated that the winged figures on the Lejre cup represent the Viking goddess Freya. According to the Edda, Freya has a cloak with falcon feathers, which enables her to fly in the form of a falcon.
