Fire saw - Medieval trammel hook in large size.
This form of trammel hook was widely used in the late Middle Ages as a kettle hook and is also called fire saw or hale.
The medieval trammel hook was elaborately hand-forged according to historical models and fitted with nine teeth to regulate the height of the kettle above the fire. This, by the way, is also the origin of the popular expression "to put a tooth in"...
A trammel hook is simply indispensable for cooking on an open fire. From the Middle Ages to modern times, the hale was part of the equipment of every kitchen - even today it is ideal for cooking on an open fire in LARP and medieval re-enactment.
The closed dimensions of the medieval trammel hook are 47 x 12 cm.
When extended to the maximum, it is 76 cm long.
The trammel hook was also significant in medieval law because when a house was sold, the lord of the manor took the kettle hook from the fire and handed it over to the buyer.
In some regions, it was also the custom for the newly-wed to give his bride a magnificently crafted kettle hook as a wedding present, thus symbolically transferring responsibility for the kitchen and hearth to her.
In heraldry, too, the kettle hook and trammel hook are often found on coats of arms and make it clear how important fire and hearth were as the focal point of medieval life.
