Viking trefoil brooch based on a Frankish model.

The historical model for this Viking Age trefoil brooch is a find from Huseby near Skaun in southern Trøndelag in Norway and dates from the 9th century. The original was made of silver and measured 6.5 cm.

A Viking goldsmith made this trefoil brooch by adding a pin to the fitting of a Frankish sword belt and reworking it into a brooch. The trefoil brooch became very fashionable among the Vikings and was worn in the centre of women's garments, often in combination with two shell brooches on the right and left.

As part of Carolingian military equipment, trefoil-shaped strap dividers from the Carolingian Frankish Empire found their way to Scandinavia, where they were repurposed as brooches and later also manufactured according to Scandinavian tastes.

As a typical component of Viking-era women's clothing, trefoil brooches are found without exception in women's graves. 
It was not until the middle of the 10th century that the trefoil brooch gradually went out of fashion and disappeared from Viking-era traditional dress.
