Ring brooches were usually used to fasten men's cloaks on the right shoulder. Smaller ring brooches were used by the Vikings to fasten the neckline of a shirt or a caftan.

In the early Middle Ages, a rich treasure was left behind in a furnace pit in the Estonian village of Kostivere, which may have belonged to one of the village leaders. The treasure is considered one of the largest hoards found in Estonia from the pre-Christian era.

The Kostivere silver hoard was discovered in 1939 while harrowing a field and was found in a birch bark box under the ruins of a former building, right next to the oven pit.
Large ring brooches were usually used to fasten men's cloaks on the right shoulder. Smaller ring brooches were used by the Vikings to fasten the neckline of a shirt or a caftan.
