The historical model for this Viking peacock brooch was found in the Danish village of Toftegård near Vindinge Herred and dates back to the 11th century AD.
In addition to this peacock brooch from Denmark, other brooches of this type are also known, e.g. from Trondheim (Norway). The brooch is now in the possession of the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen.
Bird motifs appear frequently in the 11th century. Art historical studies trace their origins on the one hand to the influence of Romanesque art, which was emerging at the time – for example from the Byzantine region – and on the other hand to the Christian-influenced imagery of the period.
Artistic adaptations by Viking craftsmen also led to an increase in the depiction of bird motifs in Scandinavia.
