Avar counter-belt fitting from the Merovingian period.
This detailed replica of a Merovingian belt fitting with palmettes is based on an Avar model from Vrap dating from the 7th century.
This type of fitting was used in the Merovingian period as a counterpart to the belt buckle and sat opposite it on the other side of the belt directly behind the belt holes, so that it formed a design unit with the buckle.
Belt fittings were very common among the Avar cavalry during the Merovingian period, and are therefore frequently found in the finds of this period.
The Avar belt fitting from Vrap measures 2.4 x 2 cm.
The belt fitting from Vrap is made of high-quality bronze and also in genuine silver-plated available.
Fastening: There are three rivet pins on the back of the Avar belt fitting. To fasten the decorative rivets, simply insert them through the corresponding holes in the leather. It is best to use pliers to bend the tip of the rivet pin inwards a little. If you then tap the rivet pins flat with a hammer, the tip will sink into the leather and the Avar belt fitting will be stable and flat on the belt.
