Married women in the Viking Age were responsible for the
household and family property. Upon marriage, she received the keys to the house and to the chests or houses where the family's valuables were kept.
The keys often hung at hip height on a
ribbon or chain from a brooch, usually together with other items such as scissors, knives or needle cases.
Married, free women were held in high esteem and had a wide range of
responsibilities around the house and farm. In many ways, the key was therefore a symbol of the strong position held by women in the Viking Age.
