The triple spiral, as a symbol of the sun wheel, has appeared in various cultures since time immemorial. The Celts referred to it as the triskelion. Triple spirals, sun wheels and triskelions were already being used in art during the Neolithic period. The triskelion was widespread in the Nordic and Celtic cultural spheres. However, the sun wheel motif can also be found in almost all other cultures around the world – it features in North Africa, the Mediterranean region, Asia Minor and South-East Asia, as well as in the Gothic architectural style of the European Middle Ages.
As a triple spiral, the sun wheel is particularly associated with the magical number three, which is of great significance in Celtic mythology as a symbol of the Trinity. The triskelion symbolises the past, present and future simultaneously. It also represents birth, life and death, as well as body, mind and soul.
