Bronze weight for a Viking folding scale - 10 grams.

Here you can buy an authentic replica of a Viking  bronze weight for a folding scale, which was made after a find from the 10th century.

This so-called ball weight or spherical zone weight corresponds exactly to an original bronze weight of the Viking Age and measures 1.3 x 0.9 cm. The weight is about 10 grams. Link to an original Viking bronze weight...

There is evidence of large numbers of spherical scale weights in the Viking Age, and they soon spread throughout the entire Baltic region in the course of extensive trading activities.

For weighing, the Viking folding scales were filled with a certain amount of hack silver or silver coins in one weighing pan and then balanced with the corresponding counterweights on the other side until the pointer aligned in the middle.

To use the Viking scales from our range properly, you can buy other bronze weights of about 2 grams, 4 grams and 8 grams in addition to this spherical Viking weight of 6 grams.

Bronze weights for scales in the Viking Age usually came in three different shapes, with a line or row of dots around the edge to prevent tampering. The weight value was indicated with small circles, dot eyes or spiral patterns.

Cubooctahedron weights had the shape of cubes with the corners cut off.

Spherical zone weights had the shape of spheres flattened on both sides.

Double zone weights
resembled spherical weights, but had a conical shape.
