Viking weights in the shape of a cuboctahedron are first attested for the Viking Age in the
second half of the 9th century and spread in rapid succession throughout the Baltic region.
One side of the scales was filled with so-called
hack silver or silver coins, and the other side was balanced with the corresponding bronze weights until the pointer was centred.
In addition to the bronze weight with about 2 grams and the
Viking folding scales from our range, you can also buy
other weights with about 4 grams, 6 grams and 8 grams.
The early scale weights of the Viking Age were
made of iron, which was covered with a thin skin of bronze or another copper alloy. This was to prevent the weights from being manipulated.
At the end of the 10th century,
standardized scale weights were finally made of a copper alloy such as bronze.
It is astonishing that despite the absence of a
central authority, the standardization of uniform weight units nevertheless prevailed among the Vikings. Weights for Viking scales primarily came in three different forms:
Cubooctahedron weights were shaped like cubes with the corners cut off.
Spherical zone weights were shaped like spheres with the top and bottom flattened.
Double-zone weights were similar to spherical weights, but had a conical shape instead of a spherical shape.
