During the early Middle Ages in the 5th and 6th centuries, such so-called S-brooches or bird fibulae were a characteristic part of women's costumes among the Frankish Merovingians and were usually worn as a pair or in combination with a rosette brooch.
Eagle brooches and other bird brooches, often as S brooches, were used by the Franks and Alemanni in the early Middle Ages to close the neckline of the dress in the chest area and were a status symbol of the wealthy Merovingian woman. In combination with a pair of brooches for the lower part of the garment, these four brooches formed the so-called Merovingian four brooch costume.
