Avar strap fitting of the Merovingian period.
This detailed replica of a small strap fitting was made after an Avar model from the Merovingian period, which dates to the 7th century.
Strap fittings were very common among the Avar cavalry in the Merovingian period, and can therefore be found very often in the find material of this period. Oriental palmette motifs were often used.
Bronze and silver belt fittings were very common among the Avars in the Early Middle Ages and were important for rank, status and clan within Avar society. Smaller fittings often served as decoration for the vertically hanging secondary straps.
The Avar strap fitting measures 1.2 x 1.0 cm.
The fitting is therefore suitable for straps with a width of 1.2 - 1.5 cm.
The strap fitting is made of high-quality bronze and is also available in real silver-plated.
Fastening: There are three rivet pins on the back of the Avar strap fitting. To fasten the decorative rivets, simply insert them through the corresponding holes in the leather. It is best to use pliers to bend the tip of the rivet pin inwards a little. If you then tap the rivet pins flat with a hammer, the tip will sink into the leather and the Avar belt fitting will be stable and flat on the belt.
