Replica of a Viking needle box made of bronze.
Such bronze needle boxes are known from several sites from the Viking Age and have been found, among others, in Birka, Sweden, and on Gotland.
Link to the original needle box...
The Viking needle box measures 7 x 2 cm with an inner diameter of 0.7 cm.
The needle box pendant is available in high-quality bronze as well as in real silver plated.
The needle box is open on both sides. A piece of virgin wool inside the needle box provided the necessary hold for the precious needles in those days and ensured that they did not slip out and were still easy to grip - and is still recommended today.
To ensure that the delicate needles made of bone or metal did not get lost and were still always at hand, Viking women usually carried a small needle box with them. This needle box could be made of bone or antler, but there were also often needle boxes made of bronze in the Viking Age.
In Viking times, needle boxes were usually carried on a ribbon or chain hanging from one of the two bowl fibulae. Needle boxes are also frequently found as a costume component among the grave goods of Viking women's graves.
