Replica of a medieval sewing needle made of brass.

This medieval sewing needle made of brass is handcrafted and corresponds to historical models from the Middle Ages.

Sewing needles made of brass or bronze were already used in the time of the Celts and were also widely used by Germanic tribes and Vikings up to the late Middle Ages. Unlike needles made of bone, sewing needles made of brass were used to sew finer fabrics.

Such a brass needle was quite precious in the Middle Ages and was therefore stored very carefully, for example in a practical needle box, where it was well protected against loss. Especially in the Viking Age, needle boxes made of bronze or bone were very common.

The replica of this medieval sewing needle made of brass measures approx. 7 x 0.2 cm.
The eye is about 1 mm in diameter.

The medieval brass needle is also available in a short version in a short version with a length of 5 cm.

Over time, brass sewing needles become smoother and glide still better through the fabric. However, they also become duller in the process. However, you can easily resharpen the needles with some fine sandpaper. Wet sandpaper with a grit of 500 or 600 is best for this.
