Detailed replica of a Viking hat tip.
This beautiful replica of a Viking hat tip was made in pewter according to a historical model from the Viking town of Birka.
Hat tips were typical for the headgear of the Swedish Vikings who settled and traded at that time along the big rivers in the west of Russia, the so-called Gardarike, and were called Rus.
The Viking hat tip is modelled on Magyar costume parts as they can be found on belt and bag fittings from the Viking Age. The original of the Viking hat tip was probably made in Kiev.
Models for the Viking Age hat tips were found in two richly decorated graves from the 10th century (graves 581 and 644), which were located on the island of Björkö in the middle of the Swedish Lake Mälar, where there was a large trading place for the Vikings from the East.
The Viking hat tip measures 6 x 3.5 cm and has four holes, which can be used to sew a few stitches onto the top of a Viking hat.
The Viking hat tip is made from high-quality pewter. In contrast to this replica, the original hat tip from Birka was made of pure silver and in elaborate filigree work.
