Bird-shaped rattle pendant from Finland.
Here you can buy an authentic Viking-era rattle pendant in the shape of a bird, based on a historical find from Finland.
Similar pendants in the shape of birds have also been found in north-western Russia and Estonia. They date from the 12th and 13th centuries. They were worn as jewellery by women in Viking-era Finland. In the pagan belief system of the Finns, the rattling was supposed to keep evil spirits and misfortune away from the wearer.
Although these pendants clearly depict birds, they sometimes feature confusing details. The pendant from Vesilahti, for example, has bird wings, but also appears to have ram's horns and a spiral tail, which does not really fit with a bird.
However, birds were of symbolic importance in both pre-Christian Finnish mythology of the Viking Age and Christian symbolism of the Middle Ages, and the person who wore this pendant may have been aware of both heavenly powers.
You can purchase the pendant in high-quality bronze or genuine silver-plated.
Alternatively, you can also order it in 925 sterling silver (please note delivery time).
