With a little dry tinder, flint and the necessary practice, you can quite easily produce sparks by striking the fire steel in the right way, causing the dry tinder to glow. By blowing gently and steadily, the initial, faint glow quickly turns into a small flame.
Dried birch tinder fungus is particularly suitable as tinder; this should be slightly frayed beforehand. You can also use cattail and fine birch paper if required. The flint used is always the so-called ‘flint stone’, which can be found, for example, on the German Baltic Sea coast.
