Viking-period bag fitting of the Magyars.

This replica of a bronze bag fitting is based on a Magyar model from the Viking Age of the 10th century.

Bronze bag fittings were typical of the splendid belt bags of the Viking Age and were worn by Rus and Magyars in particular and were thus conveyed along the great trade routes as far as Scandinavia. This is why such diamond-shaped bag fittings are sometimes found in Viking graves.

Link to the historical model...

The diamond-shaped bag fitting measures 2.4 x 2.4 cm.

Made of high-quality bronze casting and also available in real silver-plated.

Fastening: There are four pins on the back of the pocket fitting. To fasten the Magyar bag fitting, simply insert them through the corresponding holes in the leather. It is best to use pliers to bend the tip of the pin inwards a little. If you then tap the pins flat with a hammer, the tip will sink into the leather and the bag fitting will be stable and flat on the belt.

In the summer of 2003, an excavation was carried out in a district of Balatonújlak, where outstanding Magyar artefacts from the 10th century were discovered. This Hungarian site is located on a hill on the north-northeast edge of Balaton.

A total of 17 graves were excavated here, relatively many people with horse and/or harness. The graves were 20 to 70 cm deep, with the deceased lying mostly over their backs in a west-east direction, with jewellery and ornaments, most of which were made of silver.
