Strap fitting in the shape of a pilgrim's shell.

This beautiful strap fitting in the shape of a scallop shell is made after a historical model from the Middle Ages.

The dimensions of the shell-shaped strap fitting are 2 x 2.5 cm.

The "pilgrim's shell" belt stud is made of high-quality bronze casting.

Fastening: There are three pins on the back of the medieval pilgrim's shell strap fitting. To fasten the belt stud, simply insert the pins through the corresponding holes in the leather. It is best to use pliers to bend the tip of the pin inwards a little. If you then tap the pins with a hammer, the tip will sink into the leather and the medieval shell fitting will be stable and flat on the belt.

The scallop shells were originally used as scooping and drinking vessels on the coast of Galicia, and it was a widespread custom to attach a pilgrim's shell to one's walking stick or clothing on the journey home after completing the pilgrimage as visible proof that one had indeed reached one's place of pilgrimage.

In the late Middle Ages, many resourceful businessmen ran a lucrative souvenir trade with such pewter scallops and also sold other pilgrim badges on a large scale. Thus, the pewter scallop was soon widespread throughout Europe as a pilgrim's shell.
